Maranatha began in 1975 as a Christian community, when two families, the Hawkes and the Johnsons, moved into a large house together. The Maranatha Foundation was established in collaboration with St. Hugh’s Anglican Church in Newton Park, to respond to a lack of “retirement” facilities in that suburb. In 1985 cottages were built on the extended plot, and the house was converted into a Frail Care home in 1988.

Maranatha Village comprises 17 one-bedroom cottages and 2 “studio” units. A limited number of single garages are available for rent. In 2008 Maranatha merged with MHA, who took over its assets and the management of the facilities. Maranatha Village is situated on Pickering Street, Newton Park, and the name Maranatha has biblical sources, and can be translated as “Come, O Lord”.

Residents who wish to become involved with some operational matters at the village may volunteer to serve on the Liaison Committee.  Members on this committee form the link between the residents and management.

Enjoying the benefits of a small community, this village holds Happy Hour functions, Bingo and a monthly braai. In addition, musical events and educational speakers are frequently invited to entertain residents. The Village is within walking distance of supermarkets, pharmacies and other retail outlets.

The village offers a monthly Blood Pressure Clinic.

Every cottage has a Fibre connection (linking to an internet service provider is for a resident’s own account), and there is a well-stocked library on site.

Two-course midday meals are available to residents daily, at a cost which is much less than if they were to prepare meals themselves.
