Who we are

Methodist Homes for the Aged (Eastern Cape), commonly known as MHA, is engaged in the business of providing affordable, secure, comfortable accommodation and caring to qualifying retired persons and, as far as we are able to, providing products and services for all phases of their ageing process.  We endeavour to create and maintain a loving and supportive community-focused environment, subscribing to Christian values.

MHA is a Non-Profit Organization, and occupation of a cottage or apartment is exclusively on a Life Right Endowment basis (go to the Explanations tab on our website, for more information on this, and other specific details). A monthly Levy is payable (refer section headed Monthly Levy under the Explanations tab).

While we communicate and collaborate with Methodist Homes in Johannesburg from time to time, MHA (Eastern Cape) has no connection to them in any organizational or financial way, and the two businesses are entirely separate and independent.

In 1976 Reverend George Irvine was transferred by the Methodist Church from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth.  While in the East Rand area of Johannesburg he had become very involved in the Methodist Homes organization which was already established there.  On arrival in Port Elizabeth he recognized the need for a similar organization here, and so set about surrounding himself with like-minded individuals in order to plot the way forward.

Methodist Homes for the Aged (Eastern Cape) was formally established as a legal entity in January 1982, and the first residential village was occupied in 1985.  Since those modest beginnings a further five villages and a Bedsitter block, as well as two Frail Care homes and a Head Office building, were developed or acquired, spread across the city.
